CEGEP unsettles students who never struggled at school. Nothing about the subjects is harder than expected; what changes is that nobody is watching.
What actually changes at CEGEP
No one checks whether the homework is done. Attendance is the student’s own responsibility. A term is short, and a first assessment can arrive before the student has worked out how to study for it.
The pace is the real difficulty. A chapter that took three weeks in Secondary 5 takes one week at CEGEP, and the gap opens quietly, usually in the first six weeks.
The two subjects that block the most students
Differential calculus. The first mathematics course in the natural sciences programme fails more students than any other. Not because the ideas are inaccessible, but because they rest on Secondary 5 algebra that many students got through without fully securing.
French. The exit examination in French must be passed to obtain the diploma. It is prepared for, and the essay and literary analysis both follow a method that can be taught.
Why a strong secondary student can struggle
Many students got through secondary school on memory and quick understanding, without ever needing a study method. That works until the volume makes it impossible.
At CEGEP the same student, with the same ability, fails, and concludes they are not good enough. In most cases what is missing is a method, not aptitude.
When to step in
Early. A student who waits for the first failed assessment loses several weeks of a term that only lasts fifteen. The most useful moment is the start of the term, or immediately after the first result that surprises them.
Failing a course at CEGEP is not only a mark. It affects the R score, it can delay graduation, and it can close a university programme.
How we work with CEGEP students
One to one, with a tutor who knows the course. Differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, statistics, literary analysis, essay writing, and the four levels of English.
Sessions run online anywhere in Quebec at $40 an hour, or in your home at $45, travel included. The 15-hour block works out at $35 an hour online.
We go up to CEGEP and no further. University is not our service, and we will say so rather than take the work.
